This book was the best preparation we could have had for our appointment with an attorney. It was an easy-to-read guide to a difficult subject, written with compassion and loaded with information for a variety of situations. I would recommend this book without reservation to anyone with financial problems

I work in the legal field. I don't do bankruptcy work. But I often get asked questions. So, I was looking for a book that would answer the most basic questions without getting too complicated and to find a book I could refer folks to who wanted to know the basics and who would be able to understand what was being written without having a legal dictionary at their side. This book answered all those needs. It is written in simple English (no legal jargon) and it covers just about everything you'd need to know, from what kinds of bankruptcy there are, to what to do before you file, to what you do to re-establish your credit afterwards. It has charts in the back for easy reference. Even if you aren't contemplating filing bankruptcy, this is good stuff to know. Sooner or later we will probably know someone who is in financial trouble, and having a basic understanding of bankruptcy can be a godsend to talking with our friends about bankruptcy and helping them through these troubled times.

After keeping the wolves at bay for several years, it was time to make some serious financial decisions. In researching my options, this book was, by far, the most useful. Written with humour and grace, the Cahers understand the emotional toll taken when you are robbing Peter to pay Paul. The pros and cons of bankruptcy are explicitly discussed - leaving the reader to make an informed choice.
If you are reading this review, chances are you are in a very difficult situation. I recommend that you this book before making a decision.

We went through a bankruptcy chapter 7 and this book made it very simple. If you can read you can file BK. It had all documents included on the handy cd. It was very helpful, with out it we would still be drownding in debt, and being afraid of the phone calls.

If you are facing this hard time in your life buy this book. It saved us more than $950.00 dollars.V.S paying an attorney.

Bought this book for my bankruptcy class and found it very helpful. The author explained the legal concepts and policies in a clear and concise way so you can get a very good overall picture of bankruptcy law. The problems can help you test your understanding of the code and prepare for the exam, too.

Professor Martin has done a great job with this book. Law students will find it very helpful. For students and business people looking for an introduction to Chapter 11 reorganiztions, I also highly recommend Attorney Alderman's book:Chapter 11 Business Reorganizations: For Business Leaders, Accountants And Lawyers.

The consensus seems to be that this is better than the E&E competitor. I can't comment on that, because this is the only guide I bought.

Better or not, though, it needs improvement.

There are a surprising number of typos for a second edition*, including numbers in the examples that conflict with those used in the explanatory text, but its problems only start there.

It's badly organized. It seems like it was set up to reflect the progression of a very specific class. Issues aren't dealt with in one place exhaustively, but touched on in several. If you're using the book for end of semester review, or as a reference, this is frustrating because you can't just turn to one place for a complete answer.

Explanations of bankruptcy concepts are necessarily tricky sometimes, but I'm not sure that excuses chestnuts like this one on page 239: "One aspect of feasibility is quite stringent, namely that the payments proposed under the plan must actually add up to enough money to make the payments proposed in the plan." You can read that as many times as you like, but it'll still be as assertion that X=X under the bankruptcy code.

The book's most serious failings, though, is that it was clearly revised in a hurry to incorporate the 2005 Amendments. The speculative analysis of how the law was likely to develop after those changes was probably helpful in 2006, a year before this was published, but the rest of us would have been well served by an equally hurried effort to get a third edition out to encapsulate the actual case law. The cover's promise that the book's been "revised for the 2005 amendments" is misleading in 2009, when students should reasonably expect better than four year old speculations.

I'm giving it three stars because the bar for law school study aids is really low. This could actually be the best one on the topic.

* I appreciate that any review criticizing typos is sure to have at least six of them in it, so feel free to count

This is one of the few legal supplements/guides out there that has the 2005 code updates in it. Thank goodness it's out there.

The Glannon Guide to Bankruptcy lays it out fairly simply. It broke everything down into easy 10-15 page chapters, used charts, and had mini quizzes at the end of every chapter, with an analysis of the correct and wrong answers. I just found it much more user friendly. I also found the explanations to be much, much clearer. Maybe I'm just bankruptcy-challenged, but I loved this guide and it really helped with my final exam.

I tried the Examples and Explanations guide to Bankruptcy at the same time I got this one -- what a waste of money, with regard to the E&E. I like my supplements to be clear and easy to read. The E&E is more for people who want something in the beginning of the semester, and want to have an extra bit of reading and analysis with their reading. Just not my thing.

Note you CAN do the credit repair yourself, the author does give quite a bit to think about including the future of buying real estate w/ your continuing good credit to build security to wealth.

DON'T bother w/ the full package the author tries to sell you. Most everything you will need is in this book. Also consider form letters which are edited. He doesn't provide that (see how to make your credit sparkle) but does offer insights. A standard form letter edited will do or a basic credit repair software where all you have to do is enter info and print.

All in all a good book but don't let the hype and overkill of the author move you to spend hundreds of dollars on seminars to full packages when this is all that's really needed... just say no to the infomercial!

With the substantial revisions to the consumer bankruptcy law in 2005, there was a real need for a new book for paralegals and others handling these cases. Martin Frey and Phyllis Hurley put a great deal of work into this book and it shows. Kudo's. For readers looking for a good introduction to Business Reorganizatons under Chapter 11, I also like Chapter 11 Business Reorganizations: For Business Leaders, Accountants And Lawyers

Most people in the investing world don't read this book. But they should. It's a textbook so not something to breeze through at the beach. However, the techniques described in the book are very applicable to any company, not just those in disress or bankruptcy. In fact I did some work on EMC many years ago when they *appeared* to be growing rapidly but in reality they were getting into trouble. This was way back in the early 1990's when the stock collapsed from $78. Having shared my analysis with Wall Street types at the time I soon found myself there!

The main point is you can use this type of analysis effectively and because most people in general equity investing don't, it just might give you a bit more edge.
